Landscape Photography Workshops

The setting sun between clouds over a bay with birds in the water and soft pink light in the sky

If you’re searching for landscape photography workshops in the Scottish Highlands, then look no further! I’d love it if you’d join me in Scotland’s great outdoors to develop your landscape photography skills. You’ll learn from tutorials, one-to-one tuition in the field, and critique sessions. All of this will be delivered in a positive way, with the intention of inspiring you! Unlike many other professional photographers, I don’t a huge ego, and I won’t dent your confidence!

“I’m so pleased that I booked a photography workshop with Karen at the start of our North Coast 500 tour.

I’ve been dabbling with my camera off of ‘auto’ for a while but had not fully got to grips with the manual settings.

Karen quickly assessed my current level of ability and knowledge and built on this starting point.

I was rapidly able to make connections between terminology I had heard and its practical application.

There were many ‘lightbulb moments’ during the day as I developed my understanding.

Working one-to-one meant that progress was swift and I came away from the day with many new skills.”

Beginners and more experienced photographers

My workshops are suited to beginners and more experienced photographers alike. Most of my clients either own a DSLR or mirrorless camera system. However, I’ve run successful days out with only compact cameras and mobile phones! I firmly believe that the photographer is more important than the camera. This means I can help you to improve your skills regardless of the technology you’re using.

From auto to manual mode in a day!

Some of my clients already have a working knowledge of camera settings. For others, the whole business of ISO, apertures and shutter speeds is new. I’ll establish your current level of expertise and will build on this over the course of the workshop. I promise I can get you from auto to manual mode in a single day! This is regardless of the level of knowledge you bring with you.

Perfecting your images in camera

Of course, there’s a lot more to capturing great landscape images than knowing which settings to dial into your camera. I’ll pass on a lot of useful advice on composition. We’ll also practice different techniques at a range of locations. Whilst post-production is important, the emphasis will be on perfecting your images in camera. This will leave you with minimal work to do when you next load up your laptop!

“I spent a delightful day in Karen’s company as she introduced me to some hidden gems on the Black Isle.

Throughout the day, she took me through numerous aspects of landscape photography, pitching her input to the level of my (limited) expertise but building on her teaching as the day progressed.

I attended the workshop on my own but Karen is very easy to get along with and the day passed quickly and very comfortably.

It’s also clear that she can ‘up her game’ with those who are much more experienced than me.

Karen has followed this up with her own eBook summarising much of the advice she gave, together with links to useful podcasts.

All in all, this was a very worthwhile and enjoyable day. I thoroughly recommend it!”

Black Isle Photography Workshop

Photography workshops - ruined castle in field with straw bales and long shadows in foreground, with a lake and hills beyond

The Black Isle is a relatively undiscovered gem just a stone’s throw from the Highland capital of Inverness across the Kessock Bridge, and a short detour from the North Coast 500. Whether you live in the area or are here on holiday, I’ll take you to some beautiful locations on this scenic peninsula during this one day workshop, most of them away from the tourist hot-spots. I’ve lived here since 2013 and have spent the last seven years exploring this corner of the Highlands, discovering the coastline, sites of historical interest and peaceful woodlands and waterfalls. It’s difficult to do justice to the Black Isle in a single day and so you may find yourself wanting to return!

Isle of Skye Photography Workshop

Photography workshops - a mountain, hills and forest reflected in a lake with rocks in the foreground

The Isle of Skye is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland. The island is, understandably, very popular and has become much busier in recent years. On this one day workshop, I’ll take you to some stunning locations away from the tourist hot-spots but still with beautiful views towards the Cuillin mountains. I first visited Skye when I was only nine years old and have been inspired to return countless of times over the years to photograph the mountainous and coastal scenery which will no doubt appeal to any landscape photographer.

Wester Ross is home to some of the most stunning landscapes in the Scottish Highlands. On this one day workshop, we’ll visit some beautiful lochs, bays and beaches with spectacular mountainous backdrops. I first visited Wester Ross when I was a very young child and have returned to this region time and again throughout my life to capture some of the finest scenery in Scotland.

Assynt and Coigach Photography Workshop

Photography workshops - mountain and native woodland reflected in a lake under blue sky with a band of white cloud

The region of Assynt and Coigach in the north west Highlands is home to some spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. This is one of my favourite areas for landscape photography, particularly in autumn, when the landscape turns to a beautiful palette of green, orange and gold, and the silence is broken only by the sound of stags rutting on the hillsides. The mountains aren’t particularly high but what they lack in height, they make up for in character.
