Workshops

Join me in Scotland’s great outdoors to develop your landscape photography skills. Learn from tutorials, one-to-one tuition in the field and critique sessions which will be delivered in a positive way with the intention of inspiring you, as opposed to denting your confidence!

My workshops are suited to beginners and more experienced photographers alike. I believe that the photographer is more important than the camera and so I will help you to improve your skills regardless of the technology you are using. The emphasis will be on perfecting your images in-camera as opposed to in post-production.

Most of the locations we will visit will be within a short walk from the vehicle, and with no major ascents. However, we will encounter some rough terrain and so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Please browse the workshop packages below and the frequently asked questions for further details.

Alternatively please contact me for a customised quote for a bespoke one-to-one package where you choose the dates and the location.

I’ve loved exploring Scotland with a camera in my hand since early childhood and I look forward to sharing my experience and enthusiasm for photography in some of the best landscapes Scotland has to offer.

“Spent a delightful day in Karen’s company as she introduced me to some hidden gems on the Black Isle. Throughout the day, she took me through numerous aspects of landscape photography, pitching her input to the level of my (limited) expertise but building on her teaching as the day progressed. I attended the workshop on my own, but Karen is very easy to get along with and the day passed quickly and very comfortably. It’s also clear that she can ‘up her game’ with those who are much more experienced than me. She has followed this up with her own e-book summarising much of the advice she gave together with links to useful podcasts. All in all, this was a very worthwhile and enjoyable day. I would thoroughly recommend it!”
– Geoff Hulks (Black Isle Workshop)

“I booked a day with Karen for my friend and I to learn the basics of photography. As complete beginners we had mastered the basics of our digital compacts by lunchtime and spent the afternoon on the more complicated digital SLRs. That success is largely down to the teaching skills of Karen, other things that helped (a) my friend and I almost had the same compact camera and (b) we started at the same level of knowledge – nil. Karen tailored the day to what we wanted and where we wanted to go. Her advice was practical and delivered at a perfect pace – not too much too soon, but at a pace to keep your interest. Add to that her lovely character and professionalism with the booking system and you have a perfect combination. We’re practicing valuable skills in the field and will book again next year to improve even further and discover more fantastic shooting locations in the Highlands.”
– Suzanne Duff (Wester Ross and Torridon Workshop)

“Karen is a very patient and kind instructor… a first rate tutor. She simplifies the complicated formulas of ISO, F-Stops and Shutter Speed. Our workshop was on the Isle of Skye. Taking her instructions, we composed professional grade photographs in breathtakingly beautiful areas while avoiding hundreds of tourists. We would highly recommend her workshops for photography enthusiasts of all levels.”
– Terry Harrison and Terry Herbeck (Isle of Skye Workshop)

“Just wanted to thank you again for the wonderful course we recently attended with you, the whole day was fantastic and seeing some of the area we grew up in and exploring other places on our doorstep was great! While learning some new skills and working the camera to its fullest potential and creating some amazing shots! Now off to practice everything that we learnt before our holidays next year!”
– Clare and Gordon Armstrong (Black Isle Workshop)

“Just a wee note to say thanks for yesterday’s day out to the north west, really enjoyable and your tuition has inspired me to get out and experience this great land through, hopefully, taking memorable images.”
– Sandy Young (Assynt and Coigach Workshop)

“Hi Karen. Just had to say what a fantastic time our club members had on the Black Isle workshop last Sunday. Your smiling easy-going way relaxed even our newest members and had them producing better quality work in a short space of time. Thanks again and I am sure we will be booking another workshop for the club in the near future.”
– Dave Freeman, President, Nairn Camera Club (Black Isle Workshop)

“I had an enjoyable and instructive day out with Karen on her Black Isle Photography Workshop. I learnt so much and hope to put the extra knowledge to good use. Thank you Karen.”
– Charles White (Black Isle Workshop)

“Great workshop on the Black Isle. 41 years living up here and never been to these locations.”
– Jacob Christensen (Black Isle Workshop)

The Black Isle

Price: £200 for an individual | £250 for 2 to 4 people

The Black Isle is a relatively undiscovered gem just a stone’s throw from the Highland capital of Inverness across the Kessock Bridge and a short detour from the North Coast 500. Whether you live in the area or are here on holiday, I will take you to some beautiful locations on this scenic peninsula during this one day workshop, most of them away from the tourist hot-spots. I’ve lived here since 2013 and have spent the last five years exploring this corner of the Highlands, discovering the coastline, sites of historical interest and peaceful woodlands and waterfalls in amongst the seasonal changes of the agricultural landscape. It’s difficult to do justice to the Black Isle in a single day and so you may find yourself wanting to return!

On this one day workshop, I will take you to some stunning locations away from the tourist hot-spots but still with beautiful views towards the Cuillin mountains. I first visited Skye when I was only nine years old and have been inspired to return countless of times over the years to photograph the mountainous and coastal scenery which will no doubt appeal to any landscape photographer.

Assynt and Coigach

Ben Mor Coigach and Loch Cul Dromannan

Please contact me to arrange a date
Price: £300 for an individual | £350 for 2 to 4 people

The region of Assynt and Coigach in the north west Highlands is home to some spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. This is one of my favourite areas for landscape photography, particularly in autumn, when the landscape turns to a beautiful palette of green, orange and gold, and the silence is broken only by the sound of stags rutting on the hillsides. The mountains aren’t particularly high but what they lack in height, they make up for in character.
