Spend two days developing your landscape photography skills in the relaxed company of Karen Thorburn and enjoy exploring the scenic Fife coast.
The 117 mile Fife coastline offers huge potential for landscape photography and is easily accessible from the Central Belt for a weekend excursion. I spent the first 27 years of my life in close proximity to Fife, growing up in Perth followed by living and working in Edinburgh for a decade, and know the area well.
I walked and photographed the entire Fife Coastal Path in 2014 for charity and acquired an intimate knowledge of the coastline. I was amazed when the BBC picked up my story in 2017 and featured me and my photography on the primetime television programme ‘Countryfile’. This involved a day of filming on the Fife coast and an ascent to the Forth Bridge viewing platform! Whilst we won’t be doing anything quite as adventurous as this, you can rest assured that you will improve your photography skills whilst enjoying secluded beaches, picturesque fishing villages and interesting geological features, and learn to photograph some popular locations from a new perspective.
Learn from tutorials and critique sessions with individual feedback which will be delivered in a positive way with the intention of inspiring you, as opposed to denting your confidence!
Here is a sample itinerary. Expect this to change in order to take advantage of weather and tidal conditions as well as the best locations for photography.
Day 1: Arrival in St Andrews
We’ll meet at our accommodation in St Andrews at 18:00 (alternatively I can pick you up at Perth railway station, Broxden park and ride or Kinross park and ride between 16:00 and 16:30). We’ll have a welcome presentation and tutorial and relax over dinner.
Day 2: The East Neuk
We’ll start the day with a tutorial before exploring some picturesque locations around St Andrews, including the castle and the Rock and Spindle geological feature. We’ll drive south east to Boarhills and photograph one of the less frequented sections of the Fife coast around Buddo Rock (an impressive stack of red sandstone with photogenic weathering patterns and an arch) and Babbet Ness with its quiet golden beaches. We’ll return to the vehicle then drive south west to Elie and Earslferry for a leisurely stroll along West Bay and a gentle ascent of Kincraig to catch the sunset.
Day 3: Fishing Villages, Beaches and Bridges
We’ll start the day with some early morning photography at St Andrews’ West Sands before returning to our accommodation for breakfast. We’ll critique the images from the previous day before checking out of the hotel. We’ll then head south to the picturesque fishing villages of Crail and Pittenweem before travelling west to the charming village of Dysart with its harbour and historic buildings. We’ll end the day at South Queensferry in the shadow of the magnificent Forth Bridges and aim to finish at 16:00 (alternatively I can drop you off at Kinross park and ride, Broxden park and ride or Perth railway station between 16:30 and 17:00).
