Join me in Scotland’s great outdoors to develop your landscape photography skills. Learn from tutorials, one-to-one tuition in the field and critique sessions which will be delivered in a positive way with the intention of inspiring you, as opposed to denting your confidence!
My workshops are suited to beginners and more experienced photographers alike. I believe that the photographer is more important than the camera and so I will help you to improve your skills regardless of the technology you are using. The emphasis will be on perfecting your images in-camera as opposed to in post-production.
Most of the locations we will visit will be within a short walk from the vehicle, and with no major ascents. However, we will encounter some rough terrain and so a reasonable level of fitness is required.
Please browse the workshop packages below and the frequently asked questions for further details.
Alternatively please contact me for a customised quote for a bespoke one-to-one package where you choose the dates and the location.
I’ve loved exploring Scotland with a camera in my hand since early childhood and I look forward to sharing my experience and enthusiasm for photography in some of the best landscapes Scotland has to offer.
“Hi Karen. Just had to say what a fantastic time our club members had on the Black Isle workshop last Sunday. Your smiling easy-going way relaxed even our newest members and had them producing better quality work in a short space of time. Thanks again and I am sure we will be booking another workshop for the club in the near future.”
– Dave Freeman, President, Nairn Camera Club
“Great workshop on the Black Isle. 41 years living up here and never been to these locations.” – Jacob Christensen
“I had an enjoyable and instructive day out with Karen on her Black Isle Photography Workshop. I learnt so much and hope to put the extra knowledge to good use. Thank you Karen.” – Charles White

The internationally renowned North Coast 500 (NC500) has been described as Scotland’s answer to the USA’s Route 66. This 500 mile photography tour around the North Highlands, starting and finishing in Inverness, is packed with stunningly beautiful locations including golden beaches, dramatic mountain scenery, romantic castles, old ruins, scenic towns and quaint villages. I’ve been exploring these landscapes since childhood, long before the route was designated, seeking out the best locations for landscape photography. Spend five days developing your landscape photography skills in the relaxed company of Karen Thorburn and enjoy exploring one of the most beautiful islands in Scotland. Learn from tutorials, one-to-one tuition in the field, and critique sessions with individual feedback.
I’m fortunate to have visited around sixty Scottish islands. Harris, with its stunningly beautiful beaches, dramatic mountains, intimate bays and moonscape interior, is my absolute favourite, to the extent that my husband and I held our wedding ceremony on the beach at Luskentyre! I have spent a lot of time exploring Harris since my first visit here in 2002, establishing the best locations for landscape photography, and I look forward to sharing this knowledge with you.

The 117 mile Fife coastline offers huge potential for landscape photography and is easily accessible from the Central Belt for a weekend excursion. I spent the first 27 years of my life in close proximity to Fife, growing up in Perth followed by living and working in Edinburgh for a decade, and know the area well. I walked and photographed the entire Fife Coastal Path in 2014 and acquired an intimate knowledge of the coastline. On this weekend workshop, expect to visit secluded beaches, picturesque fishing villages and interesting geological features, and learn to photograph popular locations from a new perspective.

The Black Isle is a relatively undiscovered gem just a stone’s throw from the Highland capital of Inverness across the Kessock Bridge. Whether you live in the area or are here on holiday, I will take you to some beautiful locations on this scenic peninsula, most of them away from the tourist hot-spots. I’ve lived here since 2013 and have spent the last five years exploring this corner of the Highlands, discovering the coastline, sites of archaeological interest and peaceful woodlands in amongst the seasonal changes of the agricultural landscape. It’s difficult to do justice to the Black Isle in a single day and so you may find yourself wanting to return!
